Saturday February 1, 2014 - Vintages Release Report

I am using a 5-star rating system, which appears at the end of each review; here’s the key to the stars:
5 = Outstanding … 4.5 = Excellent … 4 = Very Good … 3.5 = Good … 3 = Average

Key:  Wine colour indicators - Red are red wines, Yellow are whites, etc.

The Foci … Australia (OZ), Hidden Gems (HG) and Wines for Valentine’s Day (WVD); also look for the In-Store Discoveries, now part of the general Vintages tasting.
The Skinny … There is a dismal selection of white wines this time out and some of the “hidden Gems” should have remained hidden – I weed through to give you my take on what to buy this weekend.  Plus 12 of the Ontario wines in this release were not available for tasting; more than any other region.

Argentina …
Alamos 2013 Chardonnay ($13.95 - #801571) – one of the better Chards in this release: apple and pineapple notes with hints of spiced vanilla; good value. (*** ½+)
Zuccardi 2011 Serie A Bonarda ($15.95 - #355560) – nice juicy cherry with peppery/spicy kick. (****) - HD

Australia …
Dandelion 2011 Lioness of McLaren Vale Shiraz ($19.95 - #357475) – rich black cherry, raspberry and cocoa. (*** ½+) – OZ
Devil’s Corner 2012 Pinot Noir ($23.95 - #317966) – nice kick of acidity among the cranberry-strawberry cocktail. (****) – OZ
Katnook Estate 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon ($29.95 - #590471) – eucalyptus, vanilla and cherry lead the charge here backed by spices and nice peppery goodness. (****) – OZ
Robert Oatley 2012 Signature Series Pinot Noir ($18.95 - #357491) – has elements of sweet fruit among the chalky tannins and acidity; but what really stands out is the nice cranberry. (****) - OZ
Schild Estate 2011 Old Bush Vine GMS Grenache/Mourvedre/Shiraz ($19.95 - #108183) – nice depth of pepper and herbal complexity, fruit is dark and dried; quite tasty. (*** ½+) - OZ

Canada (British Columbia) …
See Ya Later Ranch Brut ($22.95 - #271049) – yeasty with pear, peach pit and a mineral chalkiness that grows on you with each sip. (****)
Canada (Ontario) … click on wine name for full review
Henry of Pelham 2012 Cabernet Icewine ($39.95 / 200ml - #672402) – WVD
KEW Vineyards 2011 Soldier’s Grant ($18.95 - #367318) – HG
Oxley 2011 Cabernet Franc ($18.95 - #368837) - HG

Chile …
Quasar 2011 Limited Edition Pinot Noir ($17.95 - #366526) – spicy black cherry with herbal notes and a pseudo-prickly finish from the acidity. (*** ½+) - HG

France (Bordeaux) …
Chateau Tour Saint Bonnet 2009 ($29.95 - #349282) – nice spice and dark fruit blend with mocha leaning more on the coffee/licorice side on the finish. (****)
France (Champagne) …
Chateau de Bligny Grande Reserve Brut Rosé ($49.95 - #352161) – nice strawberry, raspberry and lemon peel all with balancing acidity. (****+) - WVD

France (Southwest) …

Italy (Veneto) …
Speri 2011 Pigaro Ripasso Valpolicella Classico Superiore ($18.95 - #205286) – sweet cherry on the fore-palate but it’s the white pepper that keeps the juiciness from running away with this wine. (*** ½+)

New Zealand …

The Ned 2012 Pinot Noir ($19.95 - #361261) – this is a hybrid between California and Burgundy Pinot; juicy cranberry, rhubarb, cherry that’s nicely spiced with white pepper and plenty of acidity on the finish. (****)
Sophora Sparkling Rosé ($19.95 - #353664) – entry is almost sweet with raspberry but has a nice lemon curd backing. (*** ½+)

Portugal …
Bulas 2009 Vintage Port ($49.95 - #363119) – delivers on all accounts, and if you like Port you know what I mean. (****+)
Herdade do Arrepiado Velho Red 2012 ($19.95 - #295337) – smooth plum and blackberry. (*** ½+)

Saturday February 4, 2012 - Vintages Release Report

I am using a 5-star rating system, which appears at the end of each review; here’s the key to the stars:
5 = Outstanding … 4.5 = Excellent … 4 = Very Good … 3.5 = Good … 3 = Average

This release looks at California Cabs (CABS), Greek wines (GREC) and wines for Valentine's Day (LOVE) ... I have to be honest, I don't know whay constitutes a valentine's day wine but that's what the board called them so we'll have to go with it.  Plus there's a More for Less (MOL) offering on Ontario wines, previously released wines that the LCBO has put on sale, I'm sure the wineries are getting screwed somehow on this one.  And there are a number of wines worth lining up for, so I expanded the What I'm Buying section.  So let's see what's on the menu this release ...

Argentina ...
Decero Remolinos Vineyard 2008 Malbec ($22.95 - #247304) - touch of minty with blackberry and plum. (****)
Don Nieto Senetiner Don Nicanor Malbec 2008 ($17.95 - #178657) - if colour equaled price this would be double or triple what it is selling for: dark fruit, plum, blackberry, cassis, mocha and black cherry ... good spice and really flavourful with plenty of complexity. (**** 1/2)

Australia ...
Epsilon 2009 Shiraz ($24.95 - #39552) - big fruit, big flavour ... takes away the pepper but add lots of raspberry jam. (*** 1/2+)
Kilikanoon 2007 Testament Shiraz ($39.95 - #50047) - dark chocolate, plum, cherry and blackberry on the mid-palate with a licorice and cocoa finish. (****)
S D.O.V. Grenache 2008 ($22.95 - #267963) - sweet, sweet fruit, very seductive with plum and cherry all the way through. (****)
Tapestry BG & V Shiraz 2009 ($17.95 - #247155) - this is a real finesse-filled Shiraz, and ballsy to boot and that's saying something ... great spice on the palate along with raspberry and sour cherry, there's even a hint of violets. (**** 1/2)

Canada …

(Bordeaux)

Saturday February 20, 2010 - Vintages Release

I have gone to a stars rating system which appears at the end of each review; here’s the key to those stars:
5 = Outstanding … 4.5 = Excellent … 4 = Very Good … 3.5 = Good … 3 = Average
I’m always looking for good value and I’m not afraid to give or take away a half mark for it – I’ll let you know when I’ve done so.

The two focuses for this release are Kosher wines and the Southern Rhone:

I hope this is Kosher with you …
Late last year I found myself at a kosher wine tasting and discovered that kosher wines have made definite leaps from where they once were. It seems the LCBO does an annual look at kosher wines, and that means I do too, here are the wines I would select from this release, if I were buying kosher: Looking to celebrate kosher-style then check out the Elvi Wines Cava Adar ($17.95 - #0156737) dry, crisp and minerally with yeasty and citrus notes, nice little bubbly (****). We have a crossover wine here, this one is from the Southern Rhone and falls into the Kosher category: Vignobles David le Mourre de L‘isle Cotes du Rhone 2007 ($17.95 - #0128124), nice dark fruit, touch of chocolate, juicy fruit on the tongue and a tasty finish (****½). We’ll end our look at kosher wines with this Five Stones 2009 Shiraz/Cabernet Rosé ($21.95 - #0120006), a raspberry and strawberry nose with sweet berries, especially cherries, on the palate; good for summer sipping with a side of salad, tabuli, chick pea or even falafel (****).

The Southern Rhone …
From the land of multiple varietal reds and unbelievable pricing comes this look at the South of France. Starting off with the Domaine La Garrigue Vacqueyras 2007 ($22.95 - #0156380) with its good black fruit, spice and herbs, this one is easy drinking (****). Added complexity can be found in the Domaine Saint-Pierre Vacqueyras 2006 ($25.95 - #0130013), it adds dark jammy fruit with hints of blackberry, cassis and chocolate, there’s also a nice sweet spice on the tongue (****). Ending my recommends from the South of France is the Ortas Gigondas 2007 ($23.95 - #0155440), mocha, black fruit, cassis and black cherry (****½).

Argentina – Red …
Trapiche Fincas Las Palmas 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon ($19.95 - #0143206) – a wine that delivers in spades. Nice blackberry, vanilla, cassis, coffee, toffee and so much more, and that’s just the nose. Saturday February 6, 2010 - Vintages Release

I have gone to a stars rating system which appears at the end of each review; here’s the key to those stars:
5 = Outstanding … 4.5 = Excellent … 4 = Very Good … 3.5 = Good … 3 = Average
I’m always looking for good value and I’m not afraid to give or take away a half mark for it – I’ll let you know when I’ve done so.

The two focuses for this release are 90-point wines and Valentine’s Day … so here’s what’s good:

Wines for your Valentine …
Nothing is more romantic than opening a bottle of bubbly, it usually signifies something special, and for that I recommend the Pierre Sparr Brut Rosé Cremant D’Alsace ($18.95 - #0039016) with its nice raspberry-strawberry notes and light lemon citrus on the palate (****). Another bubble of note is the Piemonte Cantina San Pancrazio Brachetto 2008 ($16.95 - #0159566), Brachetto is very much like Moscato, light and fizzy with a little sweetness – lots of strawberry flavour and beautiful colour; perfect for this time of year (*****). Moving on to something red, nothing says “my sweetie” to your sweetie, like an actual sweetie: Stratus 2008 Red Icewine ($39.95 / 200ml - #0056689). If you’re looking for a dry red wine you can start your search with the Artesa 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon ($22.95 - #0909101), blackberry, black cherry with a touch of mocha and nice tannins (****). To some nothing says Valentine’s day like a boatload of cherries, and that’s exactly what you get in a bottle of Domaine des Darrezes Cuvee Tradition Saint-Amour ($16.95 - #0159673) from Beaujolais, there is also some floral and raspberry just to give it that little extra yum-factor (****).

90-Point Wines …
We’ll start this look at 90-point wines with a stunning white: Concha Y Toro 2008 Trio Reserva Chardonnay / Pinot Grigio / Pinot Blanc ($12.95 - #0433938), not only is it an exceptional value it tastes great too: lemon-lime, melon and mineral, exotic and tasty, buy it by the case (****½). Next up is the Thelema Sutherland 2007 Chardonnay ($19.95 - #0146423) – buttered toast with a nice nuttiness, full of hazelnuts and almonds (****). Another white of note is this one from Germany: Reinhold Haart 2007 Riesling Kabinett ($19.95 - #0727461) with its sweet peach and pear flavours, very easy to sip on (****). There are two wines from Argentina in this category: Bodega Norton 2006 Reserva Malbec ($17.95 – 0017061) with its mocha, bramble, blackberry, cassis, plum and black raspberry (****); and the Luigi Bosca 2006 Single Vineyard Malbec ($18.95 - #0074922), floral notes, blackberry, a touch of spice and elegance on the palate (****½). From Australia there’s the lovely Langmeil 2006 Blacksmith Cabernet ($22.95 - #0644039) with its black fruit and spice, big 15% alcohol and black fruited finish (****½). You just had to know that France is gonna factor in here somewhere and the Domaine Grand Nicolet Vieilles Vignes Cotes du Rhone-Villages Rasteau ($21.95 - #0155481) fits the bill nicely with its smooth mocha, black fruit and red berries, this one’s big and fruity with a real kick (****½). But if you can only pick up one French wine make it the Perrin & Fils Les Christins Vacqueyras 2007 ($22.95 - #0973453) this one is a real beauty, nice red fruit, sweet licorice and lovely chocolate note; smooth, supple and delicious (*****). Two more 90-pointers left to go, there’s one from Italy, the Remo Farina Montecorna Ripasso Valpolicella Classico Superiore 2005 ($19.95 - #0056267) with layers of finesse, cherry, coffee, chocolate and a great smooth finish (****½). Finally, there’s the Cary Grant of wines: Buil & Gine Gine Gine 2006 ($17.95 - #0067843), blackberry, cassis on the nose, cherries and chocolate on the palate with a luscious red berry finish (****½), I’m giving it an extra half mark here for the price.

South Africa – White …
Lammershoek 2008 Chenin Blanc ($18.95 - #0058206) – surprising and unexpected, you think it will be fresh and lively but instead you get woodsy characteristics: vanilla, lemon curd with a touch of butterscotch; more Chardonnay-like than Chenin but still quite good. (****)

Spain – Red …
Pagos del Rey Arnegui Crianza 2006 ($15.95 - #0146274) – red and black fruit mingle with hints of chocolate, dark plum and a good tannins grip on the finish; very well priced. (****)
