Saturday August 2, 2008 - Vintages Release

Hello boys and girls, time to find out what’s happening in the LCBO’s first release of August. It used to be that August was a pretty dead month in liquor-land. We’d get one release and a Vintages magazine that looked more like a flyer. Today, there are two releases in August and both are quite sizeable. This first one focuses on two countries – well actually one country and a region: South Africa and Midi (France) – I’ll pick a top three from each place, as well as my usual picks from around the world. Ontario reviews can be found in full on my website (www.ontariowinereview.com). So here we go …

South Africa … Sorry ladies and gents, none of the whites from South Africa impressed me, and that has nothing to do with apartheid (rim shot) – but seriously, I was underwhelmed by the white wines tasted, so we’ll move immediately to the reds. First up is the Black Rock Red 2006 ($23.95 - #0068502) a blend of 4 red grapes and a dash of white: Shiraz, Carignan, Mourvedre, Grenache and a one percent sprinkle of Viognier) – a nice, sweet palate with plums, herbs, vanilla-oaky-notes and floral – very tasty. South Africa is also, like many countries these days, in the Shiraz business, Man Vintners 2006 Shiraz ($12.95 - #0071332), a multi-service red for that backyard bbq or get together, especially for the price: blackberry, spicy and a titch of vanilla. My final choice from South Africa is the Nederburg 2006 Manor House Cabernet Sauvignon ($16.95 - #0068767), a good value in an ageable red of substance. Lots of black fruit, a touch of mint and good chocolate flavours makes this wine a winner in my book.

France’s Midi Region … It’s a tough week for whites, as only one gets called upon from this region: Terres Blanches 2007 Muscat Sec ($14.95 - #0653188) – a sweet tropical nose, with a grapy palate that goes down so easy. Speaking of easy sipping wines, the rosé: Bieler Pere et Fils 2007 Rosé ($12.95 - #0071423) is perfect for outdoor events. Light, fruity with lots of raspberry and cherry … but keep in mind that this one is not a sweet rosé. The reds from Midi, for this release, are really very good, of the 6 on offer I can tell you that you really can’t go wrong with any of them; but my top 3 selections would have to start with the Domaine de L’Hortus Bergerie Classique Pic Saint Loup 2006 ($17.95 - #0079608) with its very nice smell: black fruit dominant nose and taste with a licorice finish. There’s the Domaine Le Casenova la Colomina 2005 ($15.95 - #0074542) with its sweet cherry nose, big red taste that starts red and ends all black. And finally, there’s the second most expensive Midi wine, Domaine de la Sauveuse Cotes de Provence Rouge 2005 ($19.95 - #0043174) with it’s black fruit, cassis, blackberry and judicious use of sweet oak. Yum. You’ve probably noticed that all the reds from Midi are excellent values, ranging in price from $15.95 - $22.95.

As for what to buy from the rest of the world here we go …

Ontario … Red …

Ontario … White …
Fielding 2007 Pinot Gris ($18.20 - #0078519)
Lailey Vineyard 2007 Riesling ($17.95 - #0072736)

Australia … Red …
Torbreck 2006 Woodcutter’s Shiraz ($24.95 - #0927533) – big 14.5% alcohol, very flavourful and well-made Shiraz; black fruit, pepper and spicy – yum.

Chile … Sparkling …
Valdivieso Blanc de Blancs Sparkling Brut ($14.95 - #0075085) – great value in a tasty bubbly: light, fruity, apple, citrus, good length, quite refreshing.

France … Red …
(Burgundy) – Henri de Vilamont Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2006 ($18.95 - #0084616) – red currant, raspberry/strawberry notes, firm tannins, good acidity, thoroughly enjoyable.

France … White …
(Loire) – Domaine Bellevue Touraine Sauvignon Blanc 2006 ($13.95 - #0082305) – classic grapefruit and a little grassy, this one’s pretty intense with a pretty nose; ends with lemon acidity and lingering grapefruit, which makes it pretty delicious.

Italy … Red …
(Pugli) – Cantine due Palme Primitivo ($14.95 - #0658351) – closest thing to a Cali-Zin I’ve ever tried; ripe plums and fruitiness – almost sweet-like in the mouth, jammy even; finish is smooth and delicious. As the ad goes: “I want my baby backs …”
(Veneto) – Corte Zovo Sa’Solin Ripasso Della Valpolicella 2004 ($16.95 - #0650713) – chocolate, plum, red and black fruit, descent tannin structure, tasty finish, lively wine with a restrained elegance, good price. This has been a favourite of mine for years.
Remo Farina Vigna Montecorna Valpolicella Classico Superiore Ripasso 2004 ($19.95 - #0056267) – long name for a wine I just wanna tell you is so delicious and a must have; sweet, classy, elegant in the mouth … buy some, drink some; have your friends buy some, drink theirs too.

Italy … White …
(Umbria) – Salviano Orvieto Classico Superiore 2006 ($14.95 - #0714188) – very flavourful with great lemon taste all the way through, bit of minerality on the nose, finishes dry with the apples and lemons the most distinctive.

New Zealand … Red …
Delta Vineyard 2007 Pinot Noir ($22.95 - #0675231) – very good Pinot from the Kiwis, everything you’d expect: earthy, raspberry, strawberry, black cherry – good tannins and acidity … good for aging or drink right now.
Sileni Cellar Selection Pinot Noir 2007 ($16.95 - #0694901) – this is the lighter side of Kiwi Pinot, cranberry, earthy and hints of black cherry.

New Zealand … White …
Wither Hills 2007 Sauvignon Blanc ($19.95 - #0919514) – melon, grassy, grapefruit with good acidity.

Spain … Red …
Raimat 2005 Tempranillo/Syrah ($14.95 - #0014696) – sweet both on the nose and in the mouth, ripe black fruit with spicy nuances, great price for something this tasty.

USA … Red …
(California) – Artesa Reserve 2004 Tempranillo ($25.95 - #0067272) – big alcohol at 14.7% brings with it sweet red fruit and plum nose, jammy, plumy and big in the mouth – this one’s not for the feint of heart.

USA … White …
(California) – Ferrari-Carano 2006 Fume Blanc ($22.95 - #0354993) – great wines pull off a fine balancing act. Flowery, melon aromas, tropical fruit tastes lime, melon and pineapple … very impressive and well balanced between the fruit, acidity and wood.
St. Francis 2006 Chardonnay ($20.95 - #0317131) – soft and fruity, best U.S. Chard in this lot, tropical-like nuances amongst that soft vanilla wood.

Take a Chance on Me …
This release it’s a Romanian sweetie that’s my choice to throw down a few shekels on for an interesting taste experience: Cotnari Grasa de Cotnari 2005 ($13.95 - #0073205) – as you can see, not a lot of dough for this pleasure. Made from a rare grape (Graso) grown only in Romania (450 hectares) this wine has very interesting smells and flavours: tropical notes with sweet apple, melon, peach cocktail sauce and a dollop of pear juice on the side. Great all on its own.

Grape Guy Top 3 … what I’ll be lining up for on August 2, 2008
Delta Vineyard 2007 Pinot Noir ($22.95 - #0675231) – New Zealand
Cantine Due Palme 2005 Primitivo ($14.95 - #0658351) – Italy

Saturday July 19, 2008 - Vintages Release

The LCBO is about a month late with this release: Summertime Wines. As we sit in the middle of July, and sadly, with only two months left of what we lovingly call summer, the LCBO brings us the wines of the season. Starting off the season we have the rather tasty and different Mount Riley 2007 Savee Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc ($25.95 - #0032356) from New Zealand. This wine was only a matter of time; the Zealanders make such good Savvy B. that bubbles were the inevitable next step. This is a real beauty – I tasted it last year at the New Zealand show and was blown away, obviously so were the folks at the LiC-BO.

From Argentina look for the Navarro Correas Coleccion Privada Chardonnay 2006 ($13.95 - #0064477), a good light, easy drinking Chard … so uncomplicated yet so tasty. From Chile, Navas Winemaker’s Selection Chardonnay/Marsanne/Viognier 2006 ($18.95 - #0063909) – three grapes make up this easy, breezy wine full of toasty-vanilla, apricot and pear with a pleasant and rather lengthy finish. Another Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, this time its a still table wine, Momo 2007 Sauvignon Blanc ($19.95 - #0009167) – very typical New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc with a touch of apparent sweetness in the mid-palate then the acidity takes over and follows with a dry finish. For $2 less, there’s the Omaka Springs 2007 Sauvignon Blanc ($17.95 - #0063354), lighter flavours and smells than the Momo – a little less intense, but still quite lovely.

Moving into the old world now, France and its summertime selections will start us off. Bernard Defaix Chablis Cote de Lechet 2005 ($31.95 - #0950667), a little on the pricey side, but light and airy apple give way to mineral, fruitiness and pears on the finish. Fournier Les Maulins Bales Sancerre 2006 ($27.95 - #0651091), another chunk of change, but this is where France meets New Zealand – all the flavours of a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc with all the finesse of France … beautiful and delicious.

No summer is complete without at least one good Riesling, and here it is: Domdechant Werner’sches Riesling Kabinett 2006 ($19.95 - #0722413), light on alcohol – 10% (for drink-all-day-ability), full on peachy-pear taste with great balancing acidity.

As for the Ontario summer sippers check out these:
Cave Spring Cellars 2006 Estate Bottled Sauvignon Blanc - $19.95 - #0071662
Flat Rock Cellars 2007 Riesling - $16.95 - #0043281
Henry of Pelham 2007 Pinot Blanc - $14.95 - #0618827

Now for the rest of the world and their wine offerings. All my white selections were from the “summertime” release feature, so below is mostly red with a smattering of sparkling and rosé (one each). As usual Ontario reviews can be found in full on my website (www.ontariowinereview.com) by just clicking the hot link.

Ontario …Sparkling ...
Chateau des Charmes Methode Tradition Brut - $22.95 - #0207944

Australia … Red …
D’Arenberg 2006 The Stump Jump Grenache/Shiraz/Mourvedre ($13.95 - #0606236) – an easy drink-now kinda wine, but 2-3 years in the cellar won’t hurt it either.

Chile … Red …
Montgras 2006 Reserva Carmenere ($12.95 - #0960542) – another great value red; lots of cherry and black fruit, a touch plumy – in fact it could replace your usual Zin when dining on back ribs.

Chile … Rosé …
Valdivieso Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé 2007 ($10.95 - #0059147) – great value in a summer backyard/patio get-together wine, a little on the sweet side with raspberry and cherry notes – great thirst quencher.

France … Red …
(Burgundy) – Domaine Couvard Beaune Clos de la Maladiere 2005 ($29.95 - #0069872) – this Pinot Noir has earthy, strawberry notes along with black and sour cherry; only Pinot in this release worth its price.

(Midi) – Mont Tauch Corbieres 2006 ($16.95 - #0078717) – black fruit, herbs and red fruit in the mouth, nice tasty package wrapped up in pleasant tannins.

Mexico … Red …
L.A. Cetto 2005 Petite Sirah ($10.95 - #0983742) – cheap and cheerful red, big cherry with some plum notes, great, affordable backyard bbq crowd pleaser.

Spain … Red …
Herencia Remondo la Montesa 2005 ($23.95 - #0674572) – juicy and accessible, nice nose, pleasant red and black fruit taste with cherries being the most dominant.
Torres Gran Sangre de Toro Reserva 2003 ($15.95 - #0315648) – plums, berries, red fruit, with good tannins and some ageabilty.

USA … Red …
(California) - Cellar No. 8 Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 ($17.95 - #0068486) – juicy blackberries, very tasty with a good finish – good value too.
Frias Family Vineyard 2005 Syrah ($43.95 - #0067298) – this one’s big (14.95% alcohol) very ripe fruit and juicy as all get out; jammy yet delicious.

Take a Chance on Me …
From Austria comes this sparkler made from apricots: Mariandl Sparkling Apricot ($9.95 - #0117366) – like biting into a fresh ripe apricot, with a bit of fizz, think of it as a pre-made apricot spritzer. Perfect as aperitif, or on its own on a hot summer day … bring on the patio and share with friends.

Domdechant Werner’sches Riesling Kabinett 2006 ($19.95 - #0722413) - Germany

Saturday July 5, 2008 - Vintages Release

The LCBO is dropping us off in Argentina for this release, for a look and taste at Argentina’s signature grape, Malbec. Now, Argentina isn’t the only place Malbec is grown, nor is it the first place to find success with it. The Cahors region of France has long been considered the home of Malbec, and the Malbec grape is one of the 5 permitted in a Bordeaux blend (Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc are the others). But it seems that Argentina has grabbed Malbec by the twig and berries and has made it it’s own. There are plenty of Malbecs in this release, I’ll point you in the direction of my top 4 … after that it’s time to check out the rest of the world. As usual full Ontario wine reviews can be linked to on my website www.ontariowinereview.com.

Argentinean Malbec

Most Malbecs are under $20; you’ll notice that as you peruse the Vintages magazine, but I thought I’d throw a scare into you right from the get go. The Cantena Alta Malbec 2004 ($63.95 - #0982355) is one of the most expensive I’ve ever seen … it’s smooth as silk, easy drinking and ageable for the next 5 to 10 years, but price seems a little high … for my wallet anyway. So let’s move on. Coming back to earth, you’ll find that the Finca Flichman Gestos Malbec 2007 ($15.95 - #0068999) is more appropriately priced; it also has a plumy, chocolaty, tannin bite with a touch of floral on the nose. Finca Sophenia Reserve Malbec 2006 ($16.95 - #0066837) is an easy drinking Malbec with plenty of red fruit and red licorice, it does have some woody notes to it too, but not overly so … very tasty. My Malbec of choice is the Septima Malbec 2006 ($15.95 - #0686113) this one can best be described in 6 words: blackfruit, chocolate, herb-y, with big bold tannins. Now there’s gotta be something in here for you to try – at a price that fits into any and all budgets.

Another slight change in format this week: Reds and whites will appear under their country heading and countries appear alphabetically so you can find your favourite more easily. As always, Ontario will lead the way.

Ontario …
WhiteFlat Rock Cellars 2006 “the Rusty Shed” Chardonnay ($24.95 - #0001552)
RedPillitteri Estates 2002 Family Reserve Merlot ($39.95 - #0071753)

Argentina … Red …
Finca Sophenia Reserve Merlot 2006 ($17.95 - #0063412) – chocolaty, black and red fruit in the mouth … quite nice.
Graffigna 2004 Grand Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ($17.95 - #0060202) – smooth, black fruit oriented and a touch tannic.

Australia … Red …
Amadio 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon ($24.95 - #0063784) – black fruits and chocolate.
Barossa Valley Estate 2003 Ebenezer Cabernet Sauvignon ($39.95 - #0039537) – red fruit, plumy, herbs and spice … sinfully smooth.
Chateau Reynella 2005 Basket Pressed Shiraz ($34.95 - #0510628) – chocolate, eucalyptus, black fruit, good tannins yet smooth to the tongue-touch – quite nice.
DeBortoli DB Selection Petite Sirah 2006 ($14.95 - #0694802) white pepper is added to the chocolaty-black fruit that dominated the previous few wines. Great value.
Taltarni 2003 Shiraz ($24.95 - #0937219) – black / herb / spice … ‘nuff said.

Chile … White …
Las Lomas 2007 Chardonnay ($14.95 - #0663021) – tree fruit driven: peaches, pears, apples, with a touch of lemon acidity poured over top.
Tiera Del Fuego 2007 Reserva Sauvignon Blanc ($13.95 - #0072959) – lingering finish from this grassy, grapefruit, pleasantly enjoyable summer sipper.

France … Red …
(Southwest) – Chateau Le Raz Cuvee Grand Chene 2005 ($18.95 - #0718932) – mix of black fruit and raspy-drying tannins.

France … Sparkling …
(Alsace) – Domaine Allimant-Laugner Cremant D’Alsace Brut ($21.95 - #0030593) – lemon zest freshness, touch of sweetness, very refreshing.

France … White …
(Midi) – Michel Gassier Les Piliers Viognier 2007 ($18.95 - #0669531) – great alternative to Chardonnay – good use of oak for toasty-vanilla notes, pleasant rusty apple taste.

Italy … Red …
(Tuscany) – Tenuta San Guido Guildalberto 2004 ($67.95 - #0072439) – this one’s lovely, if not a little pricey: black fruit dominated, sweet mid-palate, great finish.

Italy … White …
(Friuli) – Attems 2007 Pinot Grigio ($19.95 - #0707950) – great summery fruit flavours with a tinge of barrel smoke and a bit weighty, though still very lively.
(Piedmont) – Batasiolo Bosc Dla Rei Moscato D’Asti 2007 ($19.95 - #0028175) – grapey, fruity with grapefruit cocktail on the mid-palate and a hint of refreshing fizz.

New Zealand … Red …
Oyster Bay 2007 Merlot ($18.95 - #0692343) – best Oyster Bay Merlot I have tried in a very long time – good fruit and wood notes … fans of this winery and Merlot in particular should love the cedary, black fruit character.

Portugal … Red …
Adegaborba.PT Reserva 2004 ($20.95 - #0080606) – fruit and licorice combo, supple in mouth with plum, vanilla, caramel and chocolate notes … tastes like dessert in dry red form.

Spain … Red …
Beronia Tempranillo Elaboracion Espeical 2006 ($18.95 - #0723643) – smoked meat sandwich in a glass, with a big side of dark chocolate for dessert … incredibly smooth.

What’s for Dessert? …
From Greece, Commandaria St. Nicolas ($17.95 - #0692491) – 15% alcohol with a creamed sherry sweetness, orange and honey on the nose, lemon zest and something sweet … delicious in the mouth with, amongst other things: vanilla-cream-caramel. Delicious and worth the dollars to pick up one or two.

Take a Chance on Me …
Bacalhoa Moscatel De Setubal 2001 ($11.95 - #0996181) – a Portuguese dessert wine that’s not too sweet and very tasty. Tastes like dried apricots that are lightly coated with honey … interesting taste sensation for after dinner.

Grape Guy’s Top Three for July 5, 2008 …
Las Lomas 2007 Chardonnay ($14.95 - #0663021) – Chile
Septima 2006 Malbec ($15.95 - #0686113) – Argentina
Adegaborba.PT Reserva 2004 ($20.95 - #0080606) – Portugal
